Coil - Demos

Unreleased Studio Recordings

ImageHost.org
Backwards was a studio bootleg recording by Coil. The origin of the source of "Backwards" is believed to have been a leak of the studio demo, in the form of a cassette. However, the entire demo was broadcast when Dutch Radio4, a radio station in Amsterdam, had Coil as in studio guests to coincide with a live performance on the date of 2001 June 01. The program was broadcast on 2001 June 18 and a four disc CD-R set of the entire broadcast, made by the radio station, was released in an unknown quantity as Dutch Radio4 Supplement. Although part of the proposed album was eventually released as The Ape Of Naples, the material is so augmented that there are very few recognizable samples.

The proposed release on Nothing Records was continuously put off. The Ape Of Naples is considered to be the reincarnation of this demo as it features completely reworked versions of "Heaven's Blade," "A.Y.O.R.," and other songs that are believed to have been originally created around the time of Backwards. "Simenon" and "Bee Has Photos" are built largely on the foundation of the song "Protection," which was released on the single Born Again Pagans.

"Bee Has Photos" and "Egyptian Basses" are not considered to be officially part of this bootleg as they were released as part of the Songs of the Week download series and not on the supposed original demo. However the version from Songs of the Week is an alternate version, much shorter in length.

On the live Coil album, Live Three, a song called "Backwards" is performed. This song is an incarnation of the songs "Simenon" and "Bee Has Photos."

This bootleg comprises the material for an album with several proposed titles, such as International Dark Skies, God Please Fuck My Mind For Good, Fire Of The Mind, The World Ended A Long Time Ago, and Backwards.Other proposed titles are also possibly referenced by this material.

Gay_Man_s_Guide_to_Safer_Sex_cover.jpg (14 KB)
Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex is the name of an AIDS awareness documentary produced by the Terrence Higgins Trust in 1992. The film was directed by David Lewis and featured a soundtrack by John Balance and Peter Christopherson of Coil. The information included in the film is presented, in part, by Mike Youle, a British doctor specializing in HIV treatment.

Soundtrack
Coil provided the music. Some of the material is reworked, some is exclusive to the movie. The tracks timings given represent the demo version and are in order of their chronological appearance in the film.

1."Theme from Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex" - 8:13
2."Exploding Frogs" - 8:40
3."Nasa Arab 2" - 4:12
4."Theme From Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex Reconstruction" - 7:49

"Exploding Frogs" is a radically remixed version of "Omlagus Garfungiloops" from Stolen & Contaminated Songs.

notes : This is NOT an official Coil album. This is a
bootleg. It was released to the internet by the
MP3 group KAOS (Kill All Organized Sound) on
Christmas Eve of 1998 as a present.

Okay, here's the story on Love's Secret Demise.
There's a guy, who shall remain nameless.
He taped two Coil items for another person, who
shall also remain nameless. The person who got
the tapes in the first place said this person works in
close contact with Coil and that the material on the
tapes was exclusive Coil material.
The quality on these recordings leaves a lot to be
desired. There's a lot of muffling as well as
distortion from it being recorded too loud from
the source.

Not much is known about these recordings.
It appears to be some form of a remixed version
of the Love's Secret Domain album.

Most of it is indentical to the versions on
Love's Secret Domain, but there is some
difference. At first it was thought it was
just some DJ re-mixing the album, but there's
one problem. The versions of Further Back And
Faster are completely different from anything
that appears on the original album and much more
oriented around the background samples. There's
also the very out of place inclusion of Scope.

10."The Pope Held Upside Down" - 3:45

Tracks 1, 4-8, 10, 12, and 13 are early or alternate mixes, some quite different; Track 4 misses five minutes of ocean sounds from the beginning.
Track 2 is in a greatly extended early version, including a minute-long organ introduction and several verses.
Track 9 is an instrumental demo.
Tracks 3 and 9 are early vocal demos; the former became "Godhead<=> Deathead", while the latter was re-recorded, the original becoming, in instrumental form, "The Wheal".

Songs of the Week are a collection of songs by Coil distributed via their former primary website Brainwashed.com. Starting in October 1998, a "Song of the week" was made available for download.
