This Immortal Coil - The Dark Age of Love (2009)


"On November the thirteenth 2004, Jhonn Balance passed away, He was, along with Peter Christopherson, the founding member of the band Coil. His brutal death marked the end of over twenty years of activism and musical genius. I have then decided to work on a project that would pay tribute to them.

I didn't want another compilation that would pile up pieces, without any link. My wish was to transpose this unique musical mood to another one, more classical and more accessible to everyone. The whole idea was to pay tribute to the music for what was beyond it, just the way Coil underlined it: "Coil is more than music".

I got my inspiration from the project This Mortal Coil, started in the eighties by the English label 4AD. Its label manager had then grouped some of its own artists together in order to play some standards of rock and pop music. Most of those who participated in this work hardly knew Coil. My purpose wasn't to go towards those artists who had a conscious connection with the music of the group, let alone musicians who claimed to be the heirs to this seminal work. My aim was to play with the discovery and take Coil's pieces towards new interpretations, rid of all influences.
The respect and the admiration that I have for Coil's work led me to surround myself with talented artists also admired for their brilliant writing. I needed strong personalities who would show a maybe unconscious will to put all their soul, with great humility and maturity, in their participation. The interpretation of Bonnie Prince Billy being certainly the most poignant testimony.

Each artist that was hired for this project was utterly fascinated by the depth of the repertory. They have all been motivated and glad to bring their know how and share it with the others.
Members of DAAU from Anvers, the virtuoso Christine Ott, Yann Tiersen and Matt Elliott have lived productive, strong and passionate meetings, which made Yann Tiersen offer Matt Elliott to participate to his new album Dust Lane. To finish and in order to strenghten this team spirit, the whole album was mixed by Oktopus (Dälek) who knew better than anyone how to put each member of the project's contribution forward.
Peter Christopherson, who since has gone back to working on his first two groups Throbbing Gristle and P.TV, has written about the titles of This Immortal Coil: "I LOVE THEM. It is the first time somebody with musical sensibility and talent has put so much time and effort into covering Coil songs. It totally passes my "hairs on the back of your neck standing up" test for the whole running time of the album. I was awe-struck."

Special limited edition of 200 numbered copies of the double vinyl set pressed on red vinyl with a bonus picture 7". Packaged in a full-color gatefold sleeve and a special red cloth bag with stamped alpha/omega-C93-logo.

Limited edition of 1200 copies pressed on black vinyl. Packaged in a full-color gatefold sleeve and printed inner sleeves.. The catalog number on the jacket reads "mt093a", but this an error: mt093a was the special limited edition and this standard limited edition was designated as mt093b.

Deluxe limited edition of 31 numbered copies (20 copies for retail sale and 11 copies as gifts for the artists involved) of the double vinyl set pressed on red vinyl with a bonus picture 7" and a bonus acetate 7". Also includes an art print, a signed insert, and a numbered and signed four-page 'funeral' card (reproduces the text of "Moonbird For Jhonn" and a short farewell message by David Tibet for Jhonn Balance that he read at Jhonn's funeral), hand-printed for David Tibet and Beta-lactam Ring by Alan Anderson. The double LP is packaged in a full-color gatefold sleeve. All contents of the box are stored in a custom-sewn white bag housed instead a custom-made wood box (made of pine, oak and walnut with the joints being dovetailed and the lid etched with text and artwork). Original retail price for these sets was $425 each.

There was a Special Edition of this Deluxe Limited Edition. Limited to one (1) numbered copy, that was auctioned off on eBay (eBay auction number: 4748664752; start date: 15 July 2005; end date: 25 July 2005; end price: US $1,625.00). In addition to the normal contents of this Deluxe Edition, the "Charity Edition" included a handwritten manuscript in David Tibets hand of the lyrics to "Moonbird For Jhonn", a photograph of Jhonn Balance, a photograph of David Tibet and Steven Stapleton, a one-sided card thanking all those involved in this charitable edition, and a hand-printed 4-page card (signed by David) featuring the text of the lyrics to "Moonbird for Jhonn" and this additional text:

"This is an edition of 1 numbered copy, signed by the author, inserted into the Beta-lactam Ring wooden-box auction edition of How He Loved The Moon. Also included is a holograph manuscript of the Moonbird text in the hand of someone who when he wrote it was David Tibet. All monies from the auction of this item will go to the John Bradburne Memorial Society for their work to the Mutemwa Leprosy Mission in Zimbabwe. My thanks to whoever bought this for their kindness and charity."



All material remixed by Steven Stapleton from the In Menstrual Night LP/CD at Colin Potter's ICR Studios in Lancashire. Current 93 were, for the original Moonsongs: David Tibet, Steven Stapleton, Ruby Tabatha Wallis, Diana Rogerson, Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, John Balance, Keiko Yoshido, Rose McDowall and Bee. All tracks previously unreleased, except Track A which appeared as Track 1 on the release A Little Menstrual Night Music CD in 2003.

Full Cold Moon (2005)


“Full Cold Moon" is a compilation of tribute tracks for Jhonn Balance and the musick of Coil. “Jhonn Balance was in an accident (which occurred at home) on Nov 13th 2004. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services he did not regain consciousness, and died later that day. Coil was Jhonn and Jhonn was Coil, so for obvious reasons Coil cannot continue”*. With the loss of Jhonn and Coil, we felt it necessary to do a project to honor their work and creative vision.

"Full Cold Moon" was a special limited release that was available for only one moon cycle after which, the project was removed from Dark Winter. With the first anniversary of Jhonn's passing, we at Dark Winter felt compelled to make this amazing tribute project available once again. Also, after Full Cold Moon was released, I had several artists who had created material but missed the deadline.
