Laurie Anderson

laurie.jpg (96 KB)
Laurie Anderson (Chicago, 5 June 1947) is an American performance artist and composer. Although she played the violin from childhood, she received her formal training in the visual arts. Her work has incorporated graphics, lighting, sculpture, mime, slides, film, speech, music and many electronics, some of her own design. By 1976, her performances were featured prominently in museums and concert venues across Europe and North America.

In 1981, Anderson's single O Superman reached number two on the British pop charts. Until then music had been only one of the media employed in her work. Anderson has achieved greater visibility than most composers of her generation, her unexpected crossover into the popular domain brought her a degree of fame usually unavailable to avant-garde artists.

Happiness Tour 2003
The Queen's Hall
Edinburgh, Scotland
25th of April 2003

Happiness conceived and performed by Laurie Anderson
Laurie Anderson has dazzled and challenged audiences for over 20 years with her revolutionary stage works
and recordings. In her new solo piece, Happiness, Anderson pares down the high-tech gadgetry and reveals
a more intimate portrait, performing a storytelling montage of moments from her life
- from temporary jobs at McDonald's and on an Amish farm to a traumatic accident she suffered at age twelve.
Stories float throughout Happiness and images recur in different guises. Anderson is not looking for conclusions,
but for another way to look at the world.

... There seems no end to her inventiveness. During the show she puts a light bulb in her mouth
and dons a pair of spectacles made out of microphones, which pick up giant percussive echoes
with every rap to her head and gnash of her teeth. ...

Happiness, she says, is my way of looking at things that both interest and trouble me:
the evolution of behaviour, how we learn and what we remember, expectations, the meaning of justice
and the effects of increasing speed: coloured by the darker elements of doubt and fear.

and to create it she lived and worked with ordinary and unusual people -
living with an Amish family for a while, another time working in McDonalds

Lou Reed helped guide her: He said, Why don't you just play what you really mean?
So I decided that the stories had to lead, the music had to go back. So now there is music
with pitches and pulses. It just doesn't work if it is more like a song structure, more elaborate,
because I am interested in the melody of language and the conversation as jazz, really, says Anderson.

If you have all of the starts and stops, saying something twice or pausing, I like that very much,
I find it beautiful. So I try not to make the work that I do sound like it has punctuation.
It is a ramble, it jump cuts particularly. And I am very interested in that.

In uncertain times, we find ourselves living more intensely in the present and asking the questions
that have been lurking uncomfortably in the background, like what do we really believe in after all?
