This project had to happen eventually, given The Club Foot Orchestra's admiration for the cockeyed chromaticism and greasepaint swing of Italian film maestro Nino Rota. The catalytic spark came from Jon Varnedoe, proprietor of San Francisco's swanky Bruno's supper club, who ignited Matthew Brubeck's volatile imagination with the prospect of a reguar weekly engagement devoted to Rota's Fellini-era charts. With a rotating Club Foot membership in tow, Matthew supervised the writing of arragements (most of them painstakingly transcribed from original soundtracks), set up gigs and rehearsals, and charged the atmosphere with an insightful blend of refined wit, experimentation, and innocent joy, in keeping with the best of all things Rota.
