:zoviet*france: - Live

In their 30 years of musical output, :zoviet*france: have become one of the most influential bands of the (post)-Industrial movement. Despite this, though, they have remained largely anonymous, playing very few live dates and generally avoiding over-exposure. Their music has been described as "a series of infernal soundworlds that wanders between organic, non-linear, lo-fi explorations and fake ethnicity, creating a world where nothing is locatable and everything is suggestion, awaiting responsive imaginations" (Phil England, The Wire). More recently, they have moved towards a more electronic sound, although still devoid of obvious reference points and still operating via the more subconcious channels of communication.



A two day festival in Newcastle in 1990 of which the Dutch radio broadcasted these live recordings somewhere late 1990. Especially of interest is the forty three minute live recording from zoviet*france, but the others are nice as well, though much shorter. Sigillum S, play a cover of Kraftwerk's 'Radioactivity'. Also on the festival were THU20, Silent Rumble and Test Dept,not inc here tho does anyone have this?

Zoviet France - Live In My Livingroom (cass 1991/Cd-r 2008)


Joee Conroy had booked Zoviet France to play Snaglewet (the old Tewlegans Tavern) on a Friday night. Later the club books the Flat Duo Jets on the same night without informing Joee or Zoviet France. When Zoviet France arrive to find out this information a hubub ensues and they say to Joee 'Whose apartment can we play nearby?'
I had made up some posters for the show - silkscreened a design on fake wood laminate (which I put on metal telephone poles) and fake ceramic floor tiling (which I put on wood telephone poles) in celebration of their legendary packaging. (Joee's poster was especially bad and this encouraged me to do my own.) So Joee suggests my apartment which was extremely close to Snaglewets. So one hot sweaty night in mid-May 1991 Zoviet France played in my livingroom through my stereo & this release is a recording of that show.

Zoviet France that evening consisted of Andy Eardley, Ben Ponton and Robin Storey.
