Miniatures

"Miniatures - A sequence of fifty-one tiny masterpieces edited by

Morgan Fisher "
ImageHost.org

"In 1980: Invitations were sent out to a highly personal selection of creative artists, asking them to contribute pieces of not more
than one minute`s duration, to what has turned out to be this extraordinarily eclectic album."

"Many of the Miniature artistes also contributed visual items for the enclosed poster"

Martin Archer conceived the Network project in 1993. The concept was simple - to advertise worldwide for contributions by soundsmiths working in any genre, with the single condition that no piece should be longer than 90 seconds. Archer's contribution was to arrange the miniatures into a creative running order, and then to digitally edit (with massive help from Matt Wand and Daniel Weaver) the individual tracks into one continuous flow of music. Volume One is a fast moving snapshot of personal music lives and activities from many countries, including electronics, contemporary classical, improvisation, free jazz and totally unclassifiable works in the course of its 78 minute journey. In this opera for characters who never meet, Archer's predilection for creating large scale structures while devolving responsibility for the detail in the music reaches its ultimate conclusion.Archer conceived the Network project in 1993. Haikus Urbains (1997)
haikus.jpg (17 KB)

The Cave 12 Disques label of Geneva has produced a diverse compilation of music experimentalists and improvisers from around the world. Haikus Urbains ("urban haikus") is a concept album similar to the Resurgent compilation Miniatures, in which artists are asked to contribute a piece of approximately one minute in length. On Haikus Urbains, each artist also remixes their piece for an out-of-order appearance for the last half of the disc. The album features a lineup of world-renowned new music artists such as turntablist and sine wave experimenter Otomo Yoshihide; violinists Iva Bittova, Jon Rose, and Carlos Zingaro; guitarist Fred Frith; multi-instrumentalist Frank Pahl; Hoahio's Haco, Luc, Andy Ex, late NY cellist Tom Cora, and many more. The result is a variety of instrumental styles and sounds, with interest for any experimental ears. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide

Sloppy Seconds (2006-??)

An on-going compilation of one-second compositions, organized into one-minute tracks. This project has joined forces with another project with the same idea. Hundreds of submissions have already poured in on the way to the 4800 track goal. (No, that’s not a typo.) Sound crazy? Here’s the curator’s argument: “A second is a long time. You can get 4 or 5 recognizable ideas across in a second. An average pop song only has 3 or 4 distinct components, at most, so you could easily reduce an entire pop song into a second. The universe was created in less than a second. So what’s your excuse?”

This is not complete, it is a work in progress. If this pans out to be a full length release at some point, we will examine the possibility of a CD release with special packaging. In the meantime, enjoy the efforts so far!

Also I'd like to extend a huge "Thank You" to everyone who's contributed so far.

Thank you so much!
I've been looking for Miniatures 2 for years!
Miniatures (1) is indespensible for doing radio. I don't know how many times I've cut to something on it when I'm in transitional panic and it always sends me in a cool, new direction. Someday, I'll get around to making a version that's cut into the individual segments.
I sure do appreciate the fine and rare quality of your shares!
