T.E.C. Tones

Greetings Faithful Through The Years, 06 / 2001

The decades of my experience in this business has been both exciting and rewarding. They have brought me many gifts of music, personal pleasure and worldly gain. I have had the honor of meeting many folk; famous, infamous and most gratifying, the wonderful fans and patrons with whom I've swapped goods and stories.

Alas, I'm closing up the mail order department to take a position in the private sector with Bravado International Group which handles merchandising for everyone from Bon Jovi and Robert Plant /Jimmy Page to Destiny's Child and Christina Aguilera. Pretty different, eh?

Many factors have gone into this decision and it was not easy to even consider leaving behind the focus of 22 years. But, I did and as of 06 / 2001 The Esoteric Music Group as you know it will be no more. It will exist as an internet production and licensing entity. I may throw some stuff up on the E-bay from time to time but for the most part, this is it.

Now for the last sales pitch. This one as you can see is beyond yer wildest dreams with prices that hurt me much more than I'm sure they thrill you.

You who have been with me since I was pitching a brand new Residents release, " Diskomo", can understand the significance of this communique. The mixed pleasure of simultaneously releasing Snakefingers last effort and Sheenahs first compilation, "Potatoes" also stands out. Of course the ineffable pride of putting out my son Simon's Stinky Puffs records and that whole era, was all amazing. It has been a great ride. So, it's on to the future. Thanks for everything and my best to you all.

Sincerely,
Tom Timony 2001.

This is the Fair release with the largest number of heavy hitters providing musical support (Terry Adams, J Mascis, Don Fleming) and some of it rocks in a radio-friendly (for Jad anyway) fashion that's downright jarring. But there is enough of the trademark Fair mania and out-of-tune playing (a downright messy, atonal cover of "On the Sunny Side of the Street") to keep diehards happy, while expanding the minds of newcomers to Jad Fair's warm and wonderful world.

Tokyo Encore was the final release by Gumball. After leaving Columbia Records at the end of 1994, the band released a live album compiled from the band's 1993 tour of Japan and sold through their fan club on their own T.E.C. Tones label. Gumball were joined on stage by members of Shonen Knife during the performance. The album features live covers of songs by The Beatles, Deep Purple, and The Germs.

While on tour in Japan in 1993, Gumball made 16 track recordings of each of their Club Quattro performances. These nightclubs featured built-in multi-track recording which made it quite easy for the band to make high quality recordings of the performances. The music was in part a nod to Japan's relationship with Western rock music of the 70's. At each gig, Gumball performed Cheap Trick's "Hello There" (made famous on Cheap Trick's live At Budokan album) and Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water" (from their live Made in Japan release). The shows also had local Japanese bands as opening acts, and when possible featured members of Japan's Shonen Knife on stage for the encore.

Video footage from the shows ended up in two videos later shown on MTV: "The Damage Done" and "Revolution on the Rocks."
